Lake Shohola
Pike
DESCRIPTION: This area is under-appreciated by birders and has tremendous potential. Unfortunately, its birding potential has been untapped and little is known about this picturesque lake. The lake itself is the main attraction and is best known for the nesting Osprey, somewhat rare as a nester in the Poconos, but increasing. The lake also hosts a number of waterfowl in the appropriate seasons. But the areas around the lake should also not be ignored. The diversity of habitat is impressive. Along the edges of the lake are grass and scrub habitats where Ring-Necked Pheasant and a variety of songbirds can be found. This area appears to be perfect habitat for Golden-Winged Warbler and they should be able to be found here. This scrub area transitions into a typical forest of the Poconos, full of oaks, beeches, and aspens. Finally, the area below the lake's dam features the cascading Shohola Creek complete with waterfalls, fast flowing water, and Eastern Hemlocks. Look for Louisiana Waterthrush along the stream as well as Blue-headed Vireo and Blackburnian Warbler nesting in the hemlocks.

DIRECTIONS: Follow I-84 to exit number 46. Follow US 6 west 8.7 miles to the large parking area on the left. Park in the lot and follow the trail to the lake. There are two boat launching areas and a number of trails worth exploring. Perhaps the best way to bird is to simply take a walk along the lake. A trail (possibly just a fisherman's path) follows through many of the above mentioned areas.
