Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

DESCRIPTION: The first hawk sanctuary in the world, Hawk Mountan is a premier hawkwatching site. There is a visitor center with excellent educational displays, instruction, and a book store.

DIRECTIONS: It is about 15 miles NNW of the northern edge of Reading. It is less than 5 miles above US 22. From US 22 proceed to Exit 12. Follow PA 737 north to Kempton. Turn left (west) on PA 143, and turn right at the first intersection (0.3 mile) onto Hawk Mountain Road. Follow this road west, keeping left at intersections to the top of the mountain (6.75 miles). If you come via PA 61, turn east on PA 895 and go 2.5 miles and turn right (south) on Hawk Mountain Road. Follow to the top of the mountain (1.9 miles). This approach is steeper and more winding. At the top of the mountain, follow the signs for parking. The Visitors' Center is located next to the parking area. The lookout is reached by walking and climbing a 0.75 mile trail. There is an entrance fee.
