Cedar Springs Road

 

Directions:  From Mifflintown, go south Main Street 0.14 mile and turn left (east) on Cedar Street, SR 2006, which becomes Cedar Springs Road (CSR). At 2.3 miles there is Long Road to the left which offers winter raptors, Horned Lark, Snow Bunting, Common Raven, sparrows in summer, and Short-eared Owl in the winter. Staying on CSR, at 2.7 miles, there is a nice pull off that gives great views of several hills and fencerows. Look for raptors, owls, etc. At 3.3 miles, you can turn on SR 2003 both to the left and right. Look for Wilson's Snipe, raptors, and Wild Turkey. Back on CSR the road offers great habitat on both sides for miles for raptors, owls, larks, buntings through the small village of Van Wert. At 5.6 miles, the area opens up again on both sides. At 6.2 miles, on the right at the top of the hill you can look for vultures and Purple Martin. At 8.1 miles, you can turn right on Metz Road, TR 492. Another good area for larks, snipe, waterfowl, and raptors. Back on CSR at 9.1 miles you can turn right on PA 333 and go 0.75 mile to the parking area of Schlegels store to see another large roost of Black and Turkey wultures.
